2010 Show

Welcome to 2010 President, Dr Anne Lewis, Knightwick Surgery who commented ‘Thank you so much for inviting me to be President this year. I really enjoyed the day. It was just such a joy to be part of a very special occasion, an honour and a privilege that I am enjoying even more in hindsight as I relive the life, the colour, the enthusiasm and the fun as everyone worked together to make it, yet again, the best show ever’

Once again the community of Alfrick & Lulsley and our many visitors from father a-field supported the Show on a wonderful sunny afternoon and spent their money enabling us to continue to support village life by making donations of the profits to support local good causes.

Once again we must repeat the praise and thanks to so many as we truly believe it is the working together of the committee, our dedicated groups of volunteers, the patrons and wider community which produces such a wonderful show for all to enjoy and for this we thank you all.

This year the Show enjoyed the delights of the new Village Hall and its many new facilities, from toilets to tables and hot water boiler to the new kitchen. It was fantastic for our many visitors to see and enjoy their refreshments provided by the dedicated ladies of the Alfrick WI as they have done for many, many years. Thank you ladies of the Alfrick WI for refreshing so many so efficiently. Congratulations and thanks must also go to the Village Hall.

With so many to thank it is not usual to single out individuals or particular organisations but we would like to highlight:

The car park volunteers who had to cope of a 30% increase on visitor numbers this year. This meant that we not only needed our second car park but also a third one, thanks to Sheila Tolley for providing us with an overflow facility.

The Parish Council for preparing the field and re-instating the ditches. Although we did not experience the deluge conditions of previous years, it always pays to be prepared for the unpredictable English climate.

The very best thanks we, as a committee, can give is the donation of our profits which this year, once again, have topped all previous records. It gives us great pleasure to record a staggering total profit of £8,259.66 which has been distributed to 29 local groups, schools and charities.

Whether you are new to our show or a longstanding loyal visitor - thank you for your patronage and for spending your hard earned cash in support of so many local good causes.

We look forward to seeing you in 2011 when we will be celebrating our 60 th Anniversary. Who knows what delights your committee will conjure up for your entertainment. Let’s hope for a wonderful sunny afternoon again.

2009 Show

In 2009 we welcomed longstanding resident of Alfrick, Grace Mansell to be our President.

It will not be a surprise to any of you that the weather has a significant impact on our overall success in terms of profit, and this year saw us back on track after the torrential rain of 2008.

Second only to our wonderful visitors each year the most important element of the success of the Alfrick & Lulsley Show is the way the committee and our magnificent groups of volunteers, the patrons and wider community produce an effect which is far greater than the sum of their individual efforts. It is the result of this synergy which visitors flock, and we mean flock to the tune of an annual average of 3,000 people, to see and enjoy each year.

The preparation for the Show is not without its pressures as we planned to replace the Village Hall with additional marquee facilities and to produce a show around a building site, which fortunately for us did not come to fruition until after our show and so we were able to integrate the Hall into the Show, as we have done for many years.

On an evening prior to the Show as the committee toured the villages to collect donations the heavens opened and everyone got soaked. A slight sick feeling descended as we all remembered last year’s weather which started on the Wednesday, but just did not stop!!! Luckily for us this year it did stop and the final preparations went according to plan.

It is difficult to thank individuals as there are so many, however the best thanks we can give as a committee is the donation of our profits and in 2009 we are delighted to report we have topped all previous records with donations to 30 local groups, schools and charities. It is with great pleasure we can confirm that the total profits donated was a staggering £7,600.

The donations for 2009 included a new donation which will continue each year. This is the annual President’s Donation which each president will be able to donate to a charity or charities of their personal choice, supporting the philosophy of this committee in maintaining and promoting village life.

  CONGRATULATIONS - 2008 SHOW

THE SHOW THAT NEVER CANCELS !

The Show took place on Saturday 6 th September 2008 in what could only be described as atrocious weather conditions, probably unseen before in the history of the Show, but this did not dampen the spirits of the Committee in their preparation or the generosity of the 700 visitors who attended during the afternoon.

I would like to personally thank the whole community for supporting the ‘reduced’ Show, which due to the rainfall couldn’t be held on the field but had to take place both in and around the Village Hall. Whether you donated a prize or baked a cake, entered a class into the Horticultural or Dog Show we couldn’t have done it without you, and most of all a big THANK YOU to those that braved the weather and attended on the day.

Mike George from BBC Hereford and Worcester introduced Henry Sandon, MBE to open the Show and the atmosphere throughout the afternoon was buzzing. The ‘Tropical Island Steel Band’ gave an uplifting and Caribbean feeling to the Show whilst visitors enjoyed our Stalls, BBQ and Bar.

Thank you to everyone who supported us, and in doing so, I am pleased to confirm that we will make a small profit which is excellent news.

CONGRATULATIONS - 2007 SHOW

The Show Committee, at their show debrief were joined by 2007 joint Presidents Gary and June Sullivan, also Henry and Barbara Sandon. Henry had both opened the Show and valued some items brought along for him to see. Show Chairman Bridget Lewis congratulated the Committee on another superb event as evidenced by the funds raised for local good causes. Henry Sandon, who had travelled all the way from recording an episode of the BBC Antiques Roadshow in Exeter that day to join the meeting praised the Show and expressed just how enjoyable it was.

Our treasurer Jonathan Wilkinson revealed that we exceeded all previous sums of money raised. This money was distributed between Alfrick Church, the Village Hall and 22 different beneficiaries including playgroups and schools in the area, Brownies, Guides and Venture Scouts as well as cricket and football clubs. The Show also supports the British Red Cross, Royal British Legion, Rural Stress Network (a farming charity), Worcestershire Wildlife Trust, RNLI and Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Quotes:

Bridget Lewis (Chairman):“Everyone had a wonderful day, the atmosphere was really good and of course the Spitfire flypast really did steal the limelight, people haven’t stopped talking about it since!”

“We were delighted to welcome Henry Sandon (and Barbara) back to the 2007 Show. A big thank you too goes to our loyal supporter Mike George of BBC H&W who compered the main arena events and announcements during the day”

Jonathan Wilkinson (Treasurer): The amount raised this yearshows a significant increase on last year’s total and means we have once again raised the bar and achieved an amazing result. Despite increases in running costs we have easily beaten all previous records, as shown above. A major achievement by our small community.

Gavin Lewis (Programme and Advertising):The crowds were enormous, and the weather was just perfect having suffered gales and torrential rain the previous year. Our new look, all colour programme, was well received. Thanks must go to the Malvern Gazette for helping to promote the event. A big thank you also to BBC Hereford and Worcester who do much to support us. The 2008 Show will take place on Saturday 6th September, so look out for our big yellow signs and come along to have a really great day.”

Hope to see you this year!
